K7JEB AM Log: 01 July - 21 Sept 2007
Autumnal Equinox Edition
* 03/July/Tues evening/144.45 Mcs
George, W8QBG, is still wrestling with configuration issues
on his second (or is it third?) T-368. Coming in a close
second are high-resistance wires in the interconnect
harnesses.
Jim, K7SC, is wondering about the power-handling
capabilities of RG-6 and RG-62. Wants to use existing CATV
wiring in house for antenna feeds, hopefully after
disconnecting the cable service.
Lock, W1ZD, reports that the next step in building the power
supply for his ART-13, installing the very-heavy HV
transformer, has been accomplished.
K7JEB marvels at the asking price of $1500 for a 'Turbo
Ranger'.
Some discussion about exactly where Parks, Arizona is in
light of Ted, WA8ULG's open-house invitation in conjunction
with the upcoming Williams Hamfest. For the record, Parks
is about halfway between Flagstaff and Williams. The WA8ULG
QTH is 6 miles south of I-40.
* 08/July/Sun morning/Mobile from Williams/3855 kcs
Ted, WA6TJN, finds me on 3860 LSB and rides along down to
Phoenix. QSY to 3855 AM for usual roundtable. Lots of
opinions about just-concluded Williams hamfest, mostly
negative.
However, it was very positive for K7JEB because he got to
meet Wayne - W6IRD, Sharon - K6IRD, George - WA6HCX and Ron
- W6OM all in person at Max, K7CAX's motorhome and have a
sit-down at a table inside the commercial building. All
these folks get five gold stars for making the arduous trek
over to Williams in the July heat.
The other event that made the 'fest worthwhile was the open
house at the WA8ULG QTH. Ted put on quite a bean feed and
the tech discussions were still going full blast when K7JEB
packed it up and returned to Williams around 8pm Saturday
night.
* 12/July/Thurs noon/7293 kcs
Tom, AE8O, in New Mexico reports spotty contacts on 10- and
20-meter SSB, no AM. Some discussion about the futility of
watering trees in a drought. K7JEB thinking about
trading-in gas-guzzling pickup truck mobile for thrifty,
light automobile. Wouldn't have the groundplane that
present truck has, though.
* 14/July/Sat morning/3855 kcs
Martin, K7BDY, checks-in from the Mogollon Rim reporting dry
conditions there. Recalls that in past years rainfall there
was close to 30"/yr but hasn't seen that recently.
K6EC is evaluating WB6BLD's SuperSmith program.
Larry, KO6SM, advises K7JEB he has HMO coverage under
Medicare and is reasonably happy with it. K7JEB still
trying to cope with the age-65 issues.
WA8ULG is back at his Scottsdale QTH and dealing with
sprinkler-system issues. It's always something.
* 15/July/Sun morning/3855 kcs
Damon, W7MD, says that garage/hamshack construction is
nearly done and the light at the end of the tunnel is not an
oncoming train.
* 17/July/Tues evening/144.45 Mcs
W8QBG reports powerline noise at his QTH is S9+20db and is
threatening bodily harm to SRP. Noise ranges from BC band
up through 2 meters. Since George can't work anybody
through that racket, he has stayed busy refurbishing the
second, recently acquired T-368. That unit required rather
extensive internal repairs and a complete repainting of the
case and front panels. It is now on the air on 160.
K7JEB reports a 111-degree reading on his back porch at 1930
net time.
* 21/July/Sat morning/3855 kcs
WA8ULG reports that the $2 oscilloscope he uses for
modulation monitoring went belly-up and is wondering if it
would be cost-effective to repair it.
K7JEB wonders if the concealed-carry permit only applies to
the handgun one qualified with. The answer from the
assembled multitude is no, one can carry any weapon once the
permit is issued.
A lot of discussion on-air about whether the state hamfest
could even return to Flagstaff. KO6SM has info that the fee
for the fairgrounds would be about $20K.
AL0F reports getting a new Harley to cruise around the area
in. Didn't get the model, though.
K7CAX, Max, is matching microphones to his DX-100. After
several tries, it sounds like the Astatic 10-D is probably
the best fit, but audio still has a tilt towards the high
end.
* 22/July/Sun morning/3855 kcs
K7JEB's Icom IC-746 comes up on frequency with no transmit
capability on any band - looks like a recurrence of the
dreaded IC-151 problem. General disgust all the way around.
K7EWE, Jim out Tucson way, reports success in converting his
Collins 32V3 to solid-state LV rectifiers. Although
condsidered a sacrilige in CCA circles, this mod reduces the
heat stress on the 32V3 transformers with their unobtainium
cores.
Max, K7CAX, finds that the Astatic 10-D is definitely the
mike for his 'new' DX-100.
John, WA6JUS, reports that his R390 is now installed on the
'Midway' museum ship and greeting visitors daily.
Randy, W7CPA, suggests making 1950's sci-fi movies with an
old Gieger counter. He is also working on resuscitating a
TV-7 tube checker for use in the W7CPA depot-level
maintenance facility.
Damon, W7MD, reports having A/C in his garage hamshack but
not the 220 volts to run it.
WA6TJN discovers a bad coax in the shack in mid-QSO.
Bob, NA7RH, rigs up an ancient reel-to-reel tape recorder to
give absolutely superb air checks to anyone he can hear.
Larry, KO6SM, is now running a Ranger driving an SB-200
linear amplifier for 200 watts of carrier power.
* 28/July/Sat morning/3855 kcs
Horrendous mid-air collision between two Phoenix TV-station
news helicopters yesterday (Friday) very much the topic of
conversation this morning. They were following a
car-jacking/police pursuit at the time over the downtown
area.
George, W8QBG, reports both refurbished T-368's running
nicely. He is now turning his attention to the I-model
BC-610 he picked up as part of the deal, finding its base
full of mud and debris. Good luck, George.
Rich Oliver, KC9GQ, wrote a letter to Cliff, KD6XH,
president of ARCA, concerning moving the July hamfest back
to Flagstaff. K7JEB forwarded message to his AM mailing
list and this provokes an on-air discussion of Rich's
points.
Max, K7CAX, continues to experiment with audio front-end to
DX-100 by A/B testing of microphones. Consensus of opinion
is that surgery is needed inside transmitter to give the
stock 500 pF audio coupling caps in the low-level audio
stages a little bit of "help".
Some discussion of skywave vs groundwave propagation for
local QSO's on 75 meters. K7JEB blathers on about E-field
vectors being parallel to the earth and everyone else tunes
out.
* 29/July/Sun morning/3855 kcs
Randy, W7CPA, announces he is going to build an
air-conditioned dog house. Further discussion brings out
the interesting fact that Randy's house has a 3-phase 220v
power feed, opening up all kinds of possibilities for
putting ex-BC rigs on the air. Going in the other
direction, Randy expresses interest in the Elecraft K-3
which is just coming to market.
Damon, W7MD, announces that the garage construction project
is officially "through" as he brings a/c online in the new
hamshack.
We hear from Dimitri, KD7FMC, in Sahuarita AZ. He is
originally from Greece and has his FT-847 well dialed-in for
AM.
Jack, AD5VO, advises by landline that his Collins 820D-1 is
now making full power on its original frequency of 1340 kcs.
All that is standing in the way of hearing that beast on 75
are a few tank components and a suitable antenna.
* 03/Aug/Fri evening/3870 kcs
Advised by e-mail that long-time Central Arizona AMer John
Anderson, K7JWA, succumbed to cancer a few days ago. We'll
all miss John's signal from his self-constructed QTH in
Maricopa and his genial presence at the area hamfests.
Nice chat with George, WB6YEC over in Lemon Grove CA about
his having to undo some extraneous mods in his Collins 32V2
transmitter. George also mentioned his work to incorporate
cathode modulation in an homebrew transmitter running a
single 813 in the final. Thunderstorm activity cut short
the QSO on both ends.
Also heard from John, WA6HYQ, running an Icom transceiver
into an SB-220 amp.
* 04/Aug/Sat morning/3855 kcs
W8QBG is still bedeviled by line noise. George is working
with SRP to resolve the problem but it is slow going since
RFI prevention takes a back seat to service maintenance.
George is staying busy modifying the two, recently acquired
BC-610's for PTT operation. He is also wondering where he
will ultimately locate all these rigs, an external storage
structure wired for power being the leading candidate.
Quite a few on-air eulogies and tributes to John, K7JWA.
Damon, W7MD, is moving equipment into and around his new
'garage' hamshack.
Max, K7CAX, is listening to KFI in Los Angeles via streaming
audio over the web because local-service radio stations in
Mexico on 640 kcs have made this US clear channel almost
unlistenable in Arizona at night and early morning.
NA7RH advises the availability of a good RFI tutorial
written by K9YC at this site:
http://audiosystemsgroup.com/publish.htm and particularly:
http://audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf
* 04/Aug/Sun morning/3855, 3840 kcs
Summer doldrums set in. K7JEB and K6CJA both bemoan their
lack of AM operation over the past month or so. K6CJA
working on an antenna for WWVB on 60 kcs.
Ted, WA8ULG, advises of an imminent balloon launch from a
spot near his Parks, AZ QTH. He also mentions meeting grand
old man of AM directional antenna design, Carl Smith, in
Cleveland years ago. And finally, Ted fires off an open
letter to KD7XH regarding the Williams hamfest and the
possibility of returning it to Flagstaff.
More discussion of vertical and horizontal polarization for
groundwave and skywave propagation. And more blather from
K7JEB about electric-field vectors.
Some discussion of 6-meter AM activity in Arizona and
whether an attempt should be made to contact the Tucson
stations on 50.4 from a favorable location in Phoenix. No
established operation on 50.4 in the Phoenix area at
present.
* 11/Aug/Sat morning/3875, 3855 kcs
Gary, W6GY, is on from Idaho. He splits his time between
there and So.Cal., still having work to do at TRW.
Rod, W5CZ in CO, runs a pair of 833's as a linear amplifier.
Nice to look at but a bear to tame in the
parasitics/neutralization department.
Martin, K7BDY, checks out early to attend a gun show at the
Elks lodge in Show Low.
Bob, NA7RH, gets his Heathkit Seneca to the point where he
feels the output power is high enough and spurs/oscillations
suppressed enough to check into the Phoenix two-meter AM net
on the previous Tuesday evening. K7JEB is chagrined by
being off the air on 2M AM due to IC-746 problems and not
witnessing this important milestone.
W7MD gets a number of pieces of furniture out of storage and
is at last beginning to feel at home in Vail AZ. He also
retrieves his ART-13 and BC-348 and is enjoying having them
around.
Lock, W1ZD, reports slow but steady progress on his ART-13
power-supply project.
John, WA6JUS, comments on his recent audio recording
activities, his work at a mentor to the local youth
orchestra and the ongoing struggle to be creative in
planning and executing recording sessions.
* 12/Aug/Sun morning/3855 kcs
K6CJA bemoans the high cost of copper wire for antenna
projects. WA6TJN is getting an audio processor, or has one
and is bringing it online. K7JEB is experiencing horrendous
powerline noise with the characteristic screech of a HV arc.
Clyde, N7IOK, is working on bringing a DX-60 up to snuff.
W7MD continues to bring furniture and other stuff out of
storage and settle-in at Vail AZ QTH.
* 18/Aug/Sat morning/3855 kcs
K7JEB brings TS-2000 transceiver online for this session.
Favorable comments all around, but there is a problem with
RF feedback into the stock Kenwood microphone. That is
solved by using the Heil HMM mobile mike, but with a
less-than-perfect audio-frequency response. W7CPA offers
the loan of a full-fidelity Yaesu MD-200 table mike to help
things along.
Martin, K7BDY, outlines his itinerary for the upcoming trip
to Europe. Sounds like the Grand Tour. Bon Voyage!
Memorial service for John, K7JWA, is scheduled for Aug.27 in
Chandler.
W8QBG reports no powerline noise observed for the last
several days at his QTH. Everyone keeps their fingers
crossed.
Max, K7CAX, asks K7JEB how he likes the Icom HT he got from
him. Answer: It did a good job talking around town during
the Williams hamfest.
Bill, K7VZP, is enjoying browsing the WWW with his new
cable-modem service from Cox Communications.
* 19/Aug/Sun morning/3855 kcs
Ken, K6CJA, spots the International Space Station (ISS)
above his QTH in Hesperia CA. He also reports going back to
a coax feedline on his 160-meter antenna, finding the
ladder-line feed troublesome from both an electrical and
mechanical standpoint.
Damon, W7MD, informs K7JEB that Bob, K7POF, has successfully
implemented remote control of his Kenwood TS-2000 via the
Internet. He also mentions that he, W7MD, monitored the
Military Net the night before with his genuine WWII BC-348
receiver. One would think that the Mil Net would sound
better on a piece of battle-hardened gear.
Gary, W7GMK, checks in with PW signal from an Icom 706. He
didn't want to fire up the vacuum-tube rig because of the
heat load. Yeah, yeah... Gary also sends along some
interesting photos of a UHF-TV transmitting antenna on Mt.
Lemmon that burned itself up. One of those is here:
http://www.arizona-am.net/test/tvant.jpg
* 21/Aug/Tues evening/144.45 Mcs
W8QBG is becoming quite the HVAC repairman as he regales us
with tales of motor replacement exercises and compressor
installation trade-offs. George is also overhauling his BTI
Amplifier that runs a 3-1000Z.
Bob, NA7RH, finds an interesting article on the Tayloe
detector on the NorCal QRP website:
http://www.norcalqrp.org/files/Tayloe_mixer_x3a.pdf as well
as good info on their DDS-VFO kits.
* 25/Aug/Sat morning/3855, 3870 kcs
K7JEB in late for 3855. Jim, W8OFC, in Marana running a
DX-60 is still on frequency and sounding good in
Glendale-Phoenix. Also run a futile exercise in matching
the newly lent W2IHY boxes to the TS-2000. Discover later
that the TS-2000 has its own audio AGC inline when in AM
mode. Nevertheless, a big thanks to Randy, W7CPA, for the
loan of the two units. They look like they will be a good
addition to the station.
That afternoon run across AA6RK and WB6YEC on 3870 and have
a nice chat.
* 26/Aug/Sun morning/3855 kcs
Ted, WA8ULG, is on from his 'horse barn' and reports having
a flashover in his coax from the main house to the horse
barn where his loop feedpoint is located.
K7CAX reports visiting W7MD at his desert QTH and describes
Damon's new hamshack as a 'dream station'. Maybe an open
house might be in order in conjunction with the Tucson
hamfest in October.
K7JEB is still having problems with the W2IHY/TS-2000
interface. The trouble is that the TS-2000 is smarter than
the operator.
* 28/Aug/Tues evening/144.45 Mcs
Bob, NA7RH, reports getting 52 watts CW out of the Seneca
and seeing 'normal' controlled-carrier operation on phone.
The problem on 2 meters turned out to be that the coupling
loop on the final tank was in backwards and couldn't
accomplish output loading properly. Apparently the previous
owner only used the rig on six meters where an entirely
separate tank circuit is switched-in. Since BAMA didn't
provide a complete assembly manual, it was only by very
careful attention to detail in the one partial illustration
showing the final tank that Bob was able to deduce the
assembler's mistake.
Lock, W1ZD, is having his own problems with his ART-13. The
multiplier stage won't kick in and provide drive above 80
meters. But to make matters really bad, the multiplier
stage is inaccessible for all the usual trouble-shooting
procedures. From what he can measure, mostly resistances to
ground from the tube-socket pins, everything looks normal.
Extreme measures are being considered, such as locating a
2nd ART-13 and using the original for parts.
Larry, KO6SM, says he has taken on being webmaster for
several non-profit websites. Welcome to the club, Larry.
K7JEB is contemplating some kind of coax patch panel after
fiddling around with coax switches, diplexers, patch cords,
gender-changing adapters, etc, etc to get the TS-2000 on two
meters and having to track down a peculiar case of RF
feedback due to a loose shell on an adapter.
* 29/Aug/Wed evening/3870 kcs (AMI Net)
Heavy line noise and QRN at K7JEB threatens to kill the
effort at K7JEB until the band opens up and W6BCN, WA6FIZ
and K6IRD come booming into Arizona. Later, during the net,
Sharon graciously supplies K7JEB's AMI number when he has a
'senior moment' with the mike keyed.
Lock, W1ZD, puts out his want for a 2nd ART-13 to the net.
K7JEB is using the Yaesu mike and W2IHY boxes to drive the
Kenwood 850 and this combo gets an approving nod from NA7RH.
K7JEB also appreciates the net letting the 'out-of-staters'
in early on the net but notes with chagrin that this pushes
the California check-ins into the later hours when the band
"goes long".
* 01/Sept/Sat morning/3855 kcs
Ron, W6MAU, is on with his Viking II, his patiently restored
Valiant having succumbed to a modulation transformer with a
HV short to ground. Much sympathy expressed as well as some
suggestions about isolating the transformer case from
ground. Ron sticks around but decides eventually to go
fishing.
Ted, WA6TJN, expresses frustration with the bureaucracy
involved in getting a failed street light, that is
generating a great deal of RF noise, replaced or repaired.
Ted is also looking for Randy, W7CPA, to check out the
documentation he has on the Kenwood twins.
Larry, KO6SM, has sent a complete Seneca assembly manual to
NA7RH and Bob is busily copying the entire thing. Too bad
this connection could not have been made earlier.
Max, K7CAX, is using his recently acquired 75A4 on AM, but
it is only outfitted with SSB filters. This does not give
Max the full-bodied AM satisfaction he is used to and he is
working on getting a wider IF filter for the unit. There is
also some discussion about how Max is able to run a personal
computer in his car for long periods to support his UPS
activities.
Ted, WA8ULG, updates and republishes his 'Flagstaff Hamfest'
manifesto. This is picked up by K7JEB and forwarded by
e-mail.
Randy, W7CPA, begins work on getting to the bottom of a
mysterious B+ problem on his TV-7 tube tester.
* 02/Sept/Sun morning/3855 kcs
Query to K6CJA about his modulating a pair of 813's with a
pair of 811A's. No problem, Ken explains, if you slap them
with the same 2000 volts you hit the 813's with. Rugged
little suckers, those 811's.
The roundtable hears from Wendell, KE7UP, in Farmington NM,
running a Yaesu FT-450 barefoot. Not bad AM at all.
K7JEB hears some wideband splatter from the BC station down
the road on 1360 and remembers the last time this problem
manifested itself their Harris DX-50 burned up a backplane
due to a spurious oscillation among the PA modules. Time
will tell.
* 05/Sept/Wed evening/3870 kcs (AMI Net)
Sharon, K6IRD, does a nice job gathering up the check-ins
during pre-net and hands them off the Brian, NI6Q, when he
comes up on frequency as NCS.
K7JEB is trying out a Heil HM-5 Handi-mike with the W2IHY
boxes and by coincidence K9EID is listening in through
WJ6W's Skype interconnection. The HM-5 does drill through
the noise but also has a kind of metallic sound due to its
roll-off of the bass and treble registers. Probably use it
in the mobile where its superior RF shielding will be a big
plus.
AL0F is getting rain from the remnants of Hurricane
Henriette but none seems to be getting up to Phoenix.
W8OFC remarks that he still has not received his AMI number
from KW1I.
W7QHH and others making plans for the AMI shindig at Brad's
place in Minden NV.
* 08/Sept/Sat morning/3855 kcs
Damon, W7MD, is on in spite of having numerous aches and
pains from his back problems. He reports that his brother
not unexpectedly passed away from cancer in the past week.
Damon has had a houseful of relatives coming in to pay their
last respects. Damon is also going ahead with a pet project
- installing an electric lift in the garage to allow heavy
loads to be moved from house to garage. Also, the
mysterious disappearance of W7MD in the middle of a
transmission a while back is explained by a fuseholder in
the Globe King having finally burned in half.
Bob, NA7RH, having surmounted the Seneca output power
problem, is now turning his attention to stabilizing the
VFO, perhaps by replacing the original 6AU6 with a 6AH6 and
reducing the screen voltage. He is also looking into
running low-loss coax to the roof for the VHF antenna.
K7JEB's suggestion for the VFO: the NorCal DDS kit.
Bob also reports getting his 20-year-old Datsun 240-Z
through the state emissions check.
Some discussion between W7MD and K7JEB about using slave
flash attachments on cheap digital cameras.
* 09/Sept/Sun morning/3855 kcs
John, WA6JUS, has his Sunday schedule thrown out of whack by
his church changing the times of the services. John
supplies the audio and public-address support for those and
his presence is required.
K7VZP is finding the hamshack at his new home in Sun City a
bit smaller than its predecessor but promises to have the
KW-1 on the air eventually. W7CPA encourages Bill to think
about using a software-defined radio (SDR), but K7JEB points
out that using such a high-tech gadget will require a
special user interface for boatanchor AMers. It will have
to make them think they are really operating a Johnson
Valiant or similar rig while adjusting all the controls - a
real experiment in virtual reality.
KO6SM decided against becoming KO7SM. Max, K7CAX, is having
an intermittent mike connection, suspects the jack on the
DX-100. Randy, W7CPA, continues to puzzle over B+ problem
in TV-7 tube tester.
* 11/Sept/Tues evening/144.45 Mcs
Lock, W1ZD, reports that deal for second ART-13 didn't
happen. George, W8QBG, is replacing his frostbit ficus
trees. He also keeps in shape by doing Tai Chi. K7JEB gets
an inquiry from W8OFC about Dick Cotton, W8DX, FCC engineer
in Detroit and George remembers him well. While on memory
lane, K7JEB and W1ZD remember when the whole west end of
Phoenix and Glendale was nothing but cotton fields. Now
it's nothing but suburbs.
* 12/Sept/Wed evening/3870 kcs (AMI Net)
Hit the pre-net with a few contacts but had a prior
engagement.
* 15/Sept/Sat morning/3855 kcs
K7JEB is in receipt of a solid-state push-on, push-off
switch module from Ted, WA6TJN. This will make a very handy
transmit controller once it is packaged and interfaced to
the PTT line of the transceiver. Thanks, Ted.
A bit of discussion of audio processing. K7JEB continues to
experiment with the parameters of the W2IHY boxes, but they
seem to sound best as just a straight compressor/limiter.
They are really working well with the TS-850, somewhat less
so with the TS-2000. The wide-range Yaesu MD-200 microphone
gives a nice presence to the audio, even after it is passed
through the TS-850's microphone input.
Bob, NA7RH, is interested in trying-out the 8025 kc crystal
from the W7CCC memorial Clegg 22er that K7JEB has. It's in
the mail, Bob.
* 16/Sept/Sun morning/3855 kcs
K6CJA is making a stereo/mono adapter for his metal detector
so that he can use off-the-shelf headphones with it. He is
also working on a product detector for a homebrew receiver
he has. Ken also advises that, at long last, he bit the
bullet and now has an Extra class ham ticket. Holding onto
a General class ticket as a 40-year-long protest against the
ARRL and incentive licensing was noble and did make the
point. But it's nice to be able to move down to the 3600's
for a private QSO if you want to.
Wildfire near Big Bear Lake in the mountains raise concerns
about several of the AMers who live up there, but there are
assurances that the fire is on the opposite end of the lake
from the WA6FIZ and K6BT QTHs.
W7CPA is beginning to suspect the transformer in the TV-7
tube tester of having some kind of weirdness. Still not
right after replacing the 80 rectifier with solid-state
equivalents. On a brighter note, Randy is much impressed
with the recent offerings from Tokyo Hi-Power in the area of
solid-state HF linear amps, although he also notes the
advances in the prices as well.
* 18/Sept/Tues evening/144.45 Mcs
Jim, K7SC, is on the air from his N. Scottsdale QTH after a
summer's sojourn in the Chicago area. He reports a
successful stay there from a ham-radio standpoint having
been on the air with an Icom 706, an RM amplifier and an
indoor stealth antenna fed with RG-6 for numerous DX
contacts on several bands. He is particularly impressed
with the RM amplifier - $150 for 400 watts of solid-state
power.
Bob tries out the K7JEB "8025" xtal in his Seneca and finds
it 13 kc low at 2 meters. However, he feels it will be of
value to determine the final correlation for crystals for
144.45 that are plugged into boatanchor radios like the
Seneca or the 22er.
W6OOQ sends K7JEB a photo of a classified ad he answered
offering 'free' vacuum-tube ham gear. It turns out that Bob
walked away with a Johnson Valiant, a Johnson 500, an HT-37
and a number of station accessories - all dirty but very
restorable. Some guys have all the luck!
W8QBG continues to work on the last T-368 in the recently
acquired lot, just doing minor tweaks and repairs. George
marvels at how the transmitter will keep on going even with
all these little nits wrong with it. The
military-industrial complex of the 1950's did know how to
make some robust stuff.
