Suffer the Little Children
They are identified by ICE, the investigative arm
of Homeland Security, as UAC's, Unaccompanied Alien Children. There has been
a surge in their numbers in the past decade. Three percent came from Mexico
and most of the remainder from violence-torn Central American countries of
Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.
In 2016, The Border Patrol apprehended 136,150 illegal
entrants who were accompanied by minor children. There is no doubt that this
figure is a severe undercount of the actual number.
A law enacted in 2018 gave Homeland Security responsibility for
their immediate disposition; in settings “that were to be in the best
interests of these children". The media soon offered us scenes of kids
covered with aluminum sheets, while lying inside cages on concrete floors.
I am a believer in law enforcement, but these children
deserve better treatment than most of us afford our pets.
Unfortunately, in our view, Jeff Sessions, U.S. Attorney
General at the time, came up with what he termed a "zero tolerance
policy”. This included enforced separation of the UACs from their
parents.
My readers have long since discovered my feelings about Donald
Trump. Notwithstanding what I have complained about in the past, the
president did a good thing in countermanding the order involving innocent
children being literally torn from the arms of their loving parents.
