SHOWBIZ MEETS WHITEHOUSE CORRESPONDENTS

I should have known better, but I made one of those spur of a bored evening's decisions to watch the 2014 White House Correspondents' Dinner. I don't know what was worse: the cruel, embarrassing jibes masquerading as humor, or the blathering of a crew of commentators that CNN had chosen to critique the proceedings.

I do have to admit that president Obama had the best team of writers and though his comedic ability falls somewhat short of George Bush's infamous "Mission Accomplished" performance aboard an aircraft carrier, his timing has improved considerably.

I have to award the "Best Straight Man" performance to VP Joe Biden. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who now is in her third season as "Veep" on the series of mind numbing inanity, came close to some of the awfully funny stuff she produced while a member of the "Seinfeld" troupe. This time, she was "Costello" to Biden's great imitation of Bud Abbott. Someone said afterwards that all Biden had to do was play himself. (If you're too young, try googling "Abbott and Costello.")

"Best Straight Woman" has to go to Member of Congress Nancy Pelosi, who portrayed herself getting a tattoo while impaling the Koch Brothers with one of the best lines in the entire vignette. "What's the difference between a tattoo and the Koch Brothers?" (Answer: They're both painful, but you can get rid of the Koch Brothers).

Okay, it was not all bad.

The weirdest gig of all time issued forth as someone named Joel McHale read from a script of the most poorly conceived and badly executed "remarks" (I can't bear to call them jokes) of all time. I'm sure million of others watching the coverage suffered sympathetic embarrassing for no other reason that McHale was not embarrassed for dropping more bombs than the Eighth Air Force did during all of WWII.
