Elizabeth Warren: "I'm not running for President"

Some of the funniest stuff ever concocted came out of a small, zany, talented crew of broadcasters, headed by a comic genius named Dick Orkin, then the Production Director for Chicago radio station WCFL. Beginning in 1966, Orkin wrote, directed and was the protagonist's voice in a series of hilarious two and half-minute spoofs on action-heroes (Superman, Spiderman, etc). Orkin must have produced hundreds of them.

Each episode began with the sound of a clucking hen, followed by a chorus of voices shouting "Chickenman!* He's everywhere! he's everywhere!"

I was caused to remember this by the new darling of political talk show hosts, Senator Elizabeth Warren (Democrat) of Massachusetts. She is everywhere. Time Magazine named her "The New Sheriff of Wall Street." The Boston Globe called her "The voice of the people (who are) getting crushed by predatory lenders and under-regulated banks."

Senator Warren is writing books faster that Steven King and J.K. Rowling (The Harry Potter series) combined. In one, she describes how she learned first hand about the economic pressures facing middle-class families. When she was twelve, her father had a heart attack. The store where he was employed changed his job and cut his pay. Her mother had to take a low-paying job in order to keep the family's head barely above water.

She recently told ABC's George Stephanopoulos, "The big financial systems are hammering middle-class American families."

"What's happening is we've got a Washington for those who can hire armies of lobbyists and lawyers. Their voices get heard and rules get tilted in their favor."

"What we have is government by the corporations, for the corporations."

One of her populist battle cries is: "we need to give every kid a fighting chance to succeed." She often tells how she worked her way through college when tuition was $50 a semester. She decries the $1-trillion that students owe for loans, and predicts that debt will soon reach $2-trillion.

Both major political parties love candidates who switch from one party to the other. Ronald Reagan (President #40) was a registered Democrat until 1960. Elizabeth Warren was a registered Republican until 1996.

I've heard her say more than once, "I'm not running for President." That's what they all say until they do start running.

Me? Oh, I hope she does run!

*For years, i thought it was "Chicken Man," not "Chickenman." Research for the piece indicated the latter mutation is used to advertise CDs containing scores of the episodes. They are as funny today as they were 48 years ago.
