The Boston Marathon Bombings: One month later
In the past month I've sat down several times at my computer and could not bring myself to write about the deadly attack by the Tsarnaev Brothers at the Boston Marathon. I would rather not think about it, and I realize you do not want to either.
Still, try as we might to avoid them, the questions come unbidden.
Even though experience has taught us that the mills of justice grind with glacial speed, there are too many yet unanswered questions for people who have little patience with the trustworthiness of our government's ability to supply the answers in a timely manner.
Foremost, what is the reason that the information from Russian intelligence sent to both the CIA and FBI about Tamerlan's lengthy association with Islamic radicals did not cause his name to be bumped up to some sort of higher priority of inquiry? Current information is that his name and associated information about him were buried with thousands of other names in a massive computer file.
Many of our numerous U.S. "Intelligence Agencies" have earned the right for their title to be an oxymoron. I will say this, and I give the Boston Police most of the credit: those two maniacs had no idea they would be identified so swiftly.
Information about their remarks are coming from at least a dozen sources, recounting their preaching violent Islam; that the Twin-Tower massacre was a "Jewish-CIA plot" and that the U.S. was carrying out its missions in Iraq and Afghanistan in order to "kill Muslims."
What of the "Lone Wolf" (or Wolves) theory? Well, how could they live so well? The day after the bombing, the younger brother, Dzhokhar, tried desperately to get his Mercedes out of a repair shop. I don't care what the year is, your average part-time lifeguard or amateur boxer cannot afford a used Mercedes. Nor could they amass the arsenal they acquired or fly back and forth to Dagestan without serious financial backing.
Follow the money.
Now, what about declaring them enemy combatants? No, these killers were, for whatever reason, American Citizens. Ostensibly, they and their parents came here seeking asylum. Before they attacked us, the two murderers swore allegiance to the United States of America and received thousands of dollars in student loans.
Let's clear the courtrooms and give Dzhokhar a speedy trial of the highest priority and permit the jury to choose his sentence, ASAP. No plea bargaining, please!
As for the two Kazakhstan students and the one from Ethiopia who concealed and tried to destroy evidence after seeing the killers on TV... they deserve to be punished to the limit of our laws and deported once they serve out their sentences.
